The Secret of Ella and Micha part 1

Ella

I wonder if I can fly? With the wind and rain in my hair and my arms out to the side of me, it feels like it might be possible. Perhaps if I can get enough courage to jump off the thin ledge, I'll soar away into the night, like a bird with powerful wings.

Maybe then I could reunite with her.

"What are you doing?" Micha says, his voice higher than normal. "Get down from there. You're going to hurt yourself." His aqua eyes pierce me through the rain and his hands are on the beams above his head, hesitant to climb out onto the ledge.

"I don't think I will," I say. "I think I might be able to fly... just like her."

"Your mom couldn't fly." He balances onto the railing and glances down at the murky water far below our feet. "What are you on?"

"I took one of her old pills." I tip my head back and bask my face in the rain. "I just wanted to see what it was like for her. Why she thought she was invincible."

He steps down on the beam with his arms spanned out to the side and his clunky boots slip on the wet metal. The lightning flashes above our heads and collides with the earth.

"Your mother didn't know better, but you do." Bracing one hand on the metal wire above our heads, he extends his other hand toward me. "Now come over here. You're scaring the shit out of me."

"I don't know if I can," I say softly, raising my head back up as I rotate to face him. "I'm not sure if I want to."

He dares a step closer and his thick eyelashes blink fiercely against the down pour. "Yes, you do. You're stronger than that." His hand begs me closer. "Please, just get over here."

Staring down at the black water, my body starts to drift.

"I swear to God, Ella!" Micha shouts, his tone sharp, his muscles tense. "Give me your hand!"

Lions

Lions are carnivorous mammals that come from the family Felidae. They are geographically distributed in mostly sub-Saharan east and southern Africa, but can also be found in many zoos internationally and in India and some parts of Asia . The animals are breathtaking - they have pride and carry a mysterious aura that draw people to them.

The population of these vulnerable animals has dramatically decreased in the past few decades with no solid reason as to why. It is thought that clashes with humans and habitat loss may be a possibility, but to help further preserve and monitor these creatures, they are usually kept within reserves and parks. Only eight sub species are recognized today and there is a small range of hybrids with lions mating with tigers, jaguars or leopards to create unique creatures.

• The largest lion was recorded to be nearly 700 pounds and nearly 11 foot long.
• The oldest lion on record was nearly 29 years old.
• A lion's eyesight is five times better than a human being.
• A lion can hear prey from a mile away.
• Lions can smell nearby prey and estimate how long it was in the area.
• A lion's roar can be heard from five miles away.
• Tigers are so similar to lions that without their coats, their bodies look so similar only experts can tell them apart.
• When males join a pride, they usually kill other cubs.
• Lions can go four days without drinking.
• There is less than 50 000 lions in the world today.
• The gestation period is about 110 days.
• A lion can drink for as long as 20 mins after eating
• A male eats first, even if the female catches the prey
• Lions rarely eat an entire prey, leaving the rest for other animals such as vultures
• The average lifespan is 13 years

. The Opening Hook

You must start strong with the novel synopsis. Agents and editors want to be engaged when they’re up at night, plowing through submissions. If they don’t like the opening, they won’t get through the rest of it. Here is an example of an intriguing synopsis opening, from Monster by John Tigges:

“MAL and JONNA EVANS, in an effort to save their marriage, which has been been jeopardized by Jonna’s extramarital affair, go backpacking near Garibaldi Provincial Park, British Columbia. On their first night, while preparing their evening meal, a Sasquatch barges into their camp and grabs Jonna.”

 2. Character Sketches

You need to provide a sense of your main characters’ motivations, especially those that will bring the characters into conflict with one another. “The characters’ physical descriptions are not vital, but their motivations are,” Marilyn Campbell says. Here is a part of the synopsis for Broken Connections, which earned the author a television movie option with this quick sketch of her heroine’s backstory:

“Twenty-six-year-old JULIE HAMPTON, author of several gardening books, has returned to her native Boston from California after separating from her philandering husband, JOEL GREGG. Julie had fled to California seven years earlier to attend UC Berkeley and to put as much distance as she could between herself and her mother.”

3. Plot Highlights

“Detail the beginning and ending scenes and one or two in the middle that give an indication of the kind of emotional intensity or type of action to be expected,” Campbell says. So what constitutes a major scene worth noting? Consider: 1) Do I need this scene to make the primary plot hang together? 2) Do I need this scene for the ending to make sense? Your synopsis should reveal how much and what kind of trouble your poor protagonist is going to encounter.

4. Core Confict

If your conflict isn’t implicit in your first few sentences (a “hook”), spell it out. Your core conflict may, of course, overlap categories and could even touch on multiple types of conflict. Consider this:

“Tortured by grief and loss (person vs. self) and fleeing a wrong conviction for a crime he didn’t commit (person vs. society), DR. RICHARD KIMBALL struggles to survive (person vs. nature) while fleeing the relentless lawman who pursues him (person vs. person).

5. The Conclusion

Don’t close with a cliffhanger. Revealing the ending to your novel won’t spoil the story for the editor or agent. It will show that you’ve successfully finished your novel.  “Make sure every loose thread is tied up and never leave an editor guessing about anything,” Campbell says. If your novel is one of a series, your ending can point to the sequel.
